Server Backup Issues

5 Common Server Backup Issues

The idea behind taking a backup of your database is to protect the business from loss, but due to some circumstances, you might lose the backup. There are various possible different events that can cause server backup issues for your backup to be corrupted.

What causes Server backup Issues?

Old media can get damaged or corrupted through poor handling or simply through age. Readable backups may not have application-consistent data, so even though you restore files, applications may not come up successfully. Most often those things are completely random and are outside your control. Such events can cost your business way more than you could imagine. Backup failure is all too common.

Here are 5 common server backup fails and what your business can do to avoid them.

When you look at the reasons for failure, the same issues might come up again and again. There are some different things that you can try that might solve the issue.

1. Media Failure Causing Server Backup Issues

Most backups go straight to disk. This causes fewer media failures than during the time when tapes were the prevalent backup medium. However, media failure still ranks among the top reasons backups and restores fail.

2. Human Error Causing Server Backup Issues

Most often it’s not caused by systems and applications. It can be caused by people who can be inconsistent, unpredictable and prone to error. For Example, deciding to store tapes somewhere other than in a recommended environment can be the root cause of media failures. where mistakes are made. Backups are only as valuable as the data that reside on them.

3. Nobody Knows The Encryption Password

What happens when nobody remembers your password? The person who set it all up isn’t with the company, or the IT guy handling it is on leave. In either case, there are few pains quite like being locked out of your own files right when you need them the most.

4. Transaction Log Is Full Causing Server Backup Issues

This includes tape drives, libraries, disk arrays, backup servers and the network. And, for those relying on cloud backups, having a high-performing, a low-latency network connection is critical to the success of backups some cases it occurs that a transaction cannot be completed because there is insufficient space in the log. It can possibly be because the drive where the log is stored is full. The database might allow some queries to run, but anything that modifies data is completely locked.

5. Infrastructure Failures Causing Server Backup Issues

Backups have to traverse all sorts of infrastructure so a failure anywhere can affect the backup making it more vulnerable.  This includes tape drives, libraries, disk arrays, backup servers and the network. And, for those relying on cloud backups, having a high-performing, a low-latency network connection is critical to the success of backups so for the parts of the infrastructure that you manage, make sure to have redundancy built-in, so it doesn’t cause any hassles affecting your data.
